The beautiful Syanne Arabella Dominique Landron, was born on August 21st, 2024. A few days after Syanne was born, the family received a call that Syanne’s newborn blood panel had been flagged and that she needed to be seen at UCLA medical center first thing the following morning. Additional tests were done and it was determined that she was born with no T-cells, which meant that her immune system was nonexistent. A few weeks later, Syanne’s family received the news that she had been diagnosed with congenital athymia. This meant that her body was born without the thymus gland, which is the gland that educates the T-cells. Without her thymus, Syanne would continue to have no immune system and would need to live in strict medical isolation to sustain life.

This was just the beginning of her journey. Her dad was given special military orders that allowed him to come back home and the whole family moved into a very strict isolation. The family continued to stay in their bubble and began the process towards transplant. Along the way, Syanne spiked a few fevers, had a few inpatient stays, and received a few medical procedures. The journey towards transplant was not an easy one. It took about ten months to get medical and insurance approval. After that, she sat on the waitlist for about two months. To Syanne and her family, this wait felt excruciatingly long. When you’re living in isolation the days feel like weeks, and the months feel like years. On August 15, 2025, Syanne received the call that it was her turn to head to Duke for her thymus transplant!

Syanne, her brother Dean, her mom, and her dad all jumped on a private medical flight and headed to Durham, North Carolina! They literally flew across the United States for a chance to save her life! For the following two weeks, they stayed at a local hotel. They continuously attended numerous doctors appointment at Duke Medical Center. On August 28, 2025, Syanne went inpatient to begin her transplant process. During this time, she received multiple scans, labs, and went through the process of taking ATG (which is a medicine that helped Syanne’s body have a higher chance of accepting her transplant). This process was not easy on Syanne, however, these were the necessary steps that she needed in order to have a shot at having a life outside of her bubble.

On September 4, 2025, Syanne had her thymus transplant. Her procedure went well and within a few hours after transplant, she was up moving and taking laps around the hall in her little zebra wagon. She stayed in the hospital for another week to be monitored. All went well, and so she was discharged. She and her family continued to stay in North Carolina until they could figure out the perfect dosage of cyclosporine (a type of immunosuppressant that Syanne needs to continue keep her immune system from attacking her new transplanted thymus). On October 4, 2025 she began her flight towards immunity and home.

Syanne has continued to have regular appointments at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital. As of right now, she still visits UCLA once a week to get labs checked, IVIG infusions, and to meet with her immunology team. On March 2, 2026, Syanne will get a T cell blood panel ran. Her and her family are hopeful to see signs of her thymus working. She still has a long road ahead of her until she has a full immune system. However, she will continue to fight the fight and continue to fly towards immunity!

"The procedure, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2021, is performed only at Duke in the United States. It costs about $3 million and will be covered by insurance in an approval that came in May, several months after the medical authorization."
